Quilting Basics

  • 5601 Haines Road St. Petersburg FL 33714 USA (map)

Quilting is both an art and a skill—and this class is the perfect introduction for sewists ready to expand their sewing practice.

In this 3-week Quilting Basics course at Sew Pinellas, students will explore essential quilting techniques through hands-on projects that build week by week. You’ll begin by learning traditional hand-sewing techniques used to construct quilt blocks, gaining an appreciation for precision, accuracy, and mindful stitching.

In week two, we’ll transition to machine sewing techniques for quilt block construction, focusing on consistency, seam accuracy, and efficient piecing methods. You’ll compare hand and machine approaches while building confidence in both.

The final week brings everything together as you turn your completed blocks into a small quilted wall hanging. You’ll learn how to layer a quilt sandwich with batting, secure layers using hand and machine techniques, and finish your piece with binding for a clean, professional result.

This class is best suited for students with Level 2 sewing experience or equivalent, meaning you should already be comfortable using a sewing machine independently and can control your seam allowances. By the end of the course, you’ll walk away with a finished quilted piece and the foundational skills needed to continue quilting on your own.

All supplies are included, so you can simply show up and sew.

Let’s stitch, learn, and grow together—one project at a time!
