Pattern Drafting 2 - Gathers, Pleats & Seams

  • 5601 Haines Road St. Petersburg FL 33714 USA (map)

Once you understand how to move darts, the next step is transforming them.

In this 3-week Gathers, Pleats & Seamlines series, we take the foundational skills from Dart Manipulation and expand them into true design development techniques.

Week 1 focuses on converting darts into pleats and tucks. You’ll learn how controlled shaping can become visible design elements instead of hidden construction details.

Week 2 introduces adding fullness. Using slash-and-spread techniques on your half-scale slopers, you’ll create gathers, volume, and controlled flare in different areas of the garment. This is where structure meets creativity.

Week 3 explores turning darts into seamlines. Princess seams, style lines, and paneling all begin with dart manipulation. You’ll learn how to redraw and distribute shaping while maintaining proper fit.

Throughout the course, we continue working in half-scale so you can experiment freely, build confidence, and refine your drafting precision without the overwhelm of full-size patterns.
