Pattern Drafting 1 - Dart Manipulation

  • 5601 Haines Road St. Petersburg FL 33714 USA (map)

If you’ve ever wondered how designers turn a basic bodice into dozens of different styles, this is where it begins.

In this 3-week Dart Manipulation series at Sew Pinellas, you’ll dive into the core principle of garment shaping: the dart. Darts are what transform flat fabric into a three-dimensional garment that fits the body beautifully. Once you understand how they work, you unlock endless design possibilities.

Week 1 focuses on understanding and sewing darts correctly. You’ll explore how darts function, how they affect fit, and how to construct them with precision.

Week 2 introduces dart manipulation using half-scale slopers. Half-scale patterns allow you to practice pattern manipulation quickly and efficiently while building real drafting skills. You’ll learn how to move darts to the shoulder, neckline, side seam, waist, and beyond without changing the garment’s fit.

Week 3 expands into creative dart design. We’ll explore multiple dart placements on different garment types and experiment with style lines that begin with dart movement. You’ll begin thinking like a patternmaker instead of just a sewist.
